Yoga Therapy - Bringing the body into therapy
This is yoga therapy or therapeutic yoga - it is not regular yoga. This style of yoga has foundations in trauma theory, attachment theory, neuroscience, and hatha yoga with an emphasis on body based yoga forms and breathing practices.
My yoga courses can help reduce the following symptoms:
PTSD, Anxiety, panic and fear
Insomnia, confusion and anger
Worry, constant thought
Confusion and over thinking
Shortness of breath & racing heart
My teachings are based on a style of yoga that originates from the Trauma Centre in Boston Massachusetts. I trained and continue to have regular supervision with a Trauma Centre Trauma Sensitive Yoga facilitator - Martine Coates. In this style of yoga we work with the nervous system, brain hemispheres, interoception - learning to get out of our heads and come back into our body.
How does it work?
Through becoming present in the body and using neuroplasticity we can actually begin to rewire our brains creating new neural pathways and learn to leave the existing responses of unwarranted anxiety, panic and PTSD behind us. Trauma resides in our body. We can change our thoughts and behaviour but our fear system is operated from our nervous system therefore to change unconscious processes we need to start with the body.
There is over 20 years of research in this style of yoga with many studies showing huge reductions in PTSD after regular practice. Please visit the trauma centre website for more information https://www.traumasensitiveyoga.com/
A Safe and Nurturing space
At Violet yoga we create a safe and nurturing space for you to explore your own healing journey. We respect it is very much your body and your personal journey. Yoga mats can be positioned anywhere in the room that is comfortable for you. It's ok to honour your body and your needs, so stepping out of class to take a breath, choosing to be still or choosing to move is all ok.
There is no right or wrong in this class. When you become aware of your body, listen to what your body wants, then begin to make choices based on what you want to feel in your body - this is when the healing begins.
Violet Yoga is based in Secret Harbour, Perth, Western Austra
